Doing the training classes, we've discovered that Tashi loves the treats our trainer uses; so much so that he refuses to eat the treats we have. The problem is, these aren't available here, so we have to order them from Pet Smart in the US. This is actually dog food, but our trainer cuts it up and uses it as a training reward and dogs love it. We ordered the lamb and rice formula because Tashi has a sensitive tummy. The shipping from Pet Smart is really, really expensive. We found a way to cut costs this time around, but don't think we can afford to keep ordering from Pet Smart. The shipping costs are 6 times the amount of the goods. Ouch.
So, I cubed individual sections and bagged the sections up and then stuck the bags in the freezer. This should last us at least three months. I only used one little cube on our walk this morning. Basically, I just give him little bits from a cube that I've cut throughout a training session--giving him one whole piece is just too much. One individual bag should last about 1 week.
Tashi was like, "Whaaaaaa....?" when I closed the freezer door. Luckily, he got some bits off of the cutting board. Holding a treat above your head, I've discovered, is a great way to get a good shot of your dog (last pic below). Despite the expense, I'm glad we've got some good, healthy treats we can use for Tashi's training. Next on the training docket, I have to learn how to make treats at home.
